Debra Bernier Artist - Wood Sculptures

Debra Bernier (born 1962) is a Canadian artist who lives on Vancouver Island with her family. Debra uses natural materials, such as driftwood, clay, and seashells to create fascinating sculptures. These intricate pieces represent the spirits of nature as human fusion with the natural material.

“When I work with driftwood, I never start with a blank canvas. Each piece of wood is already a sculpture, created by the caresses of the waves and the wind,” says Debra. “The wood tells a story and I try to think about its journey that I hold in my hand. I extend or shorten curves and contours that already exist in familiar shapes of animals or human faces. »

His sculpture is inspired by his love for what is most sacred in the world: children, animals, nature. “The finished pieces are a reflection not only of my life, my family, and my children, but, a sacred and eternal connection that we all share with nature,” she says. Debra loved the beach and nature growing up and is always happy and grateful when she is able to share that love and her art with people. “The little girl in me is always fascinated by wooden shapes, the sun sparkling on the water, smooth gray stones, and salty seaweed. Simplicity brings me more happiness than complexity. I want to share it with others. »
